一、课程性质与目的
本课程旨在通过一定量的阅读实践，初步培养学生阅读的兴趣与习惯，开阔视野；引导学生在阅读中观察、了解相关英语语言与文化现象。同时，根据学生实际情况进行阅读策略的介绍与指导，知识积累与技巧训练同步发展。
二、课程简介
本课程为全校选修课，通过阅读活动帮助学生培养阅读习惯，在阅读中扩大词汇量，掌握一定阅读技巧，初步了解工具书的使用，同时了解相关背景知识。本课程主要讲授Neil J.Anderson（美）所著的《积极英语阅读教程（第三册）》，通过充分利用现代信息技术，采用立体的多媒体教学和传统的面授教学相结合的方式，实践以学生为中心的教学理念，体现英语教学的实用性、知识性和趣味性相结合的原则，使学生在反映英语国家社会各方面文化现象的阅读材料中了解英语国家的文化，进一步丰富英语知识和提高英语应用技能，掌握跨文化交际的技巧，并能培养阅读的各项技能与技巧，使学生在阅读中不仅能了解社会最新信息，培养对英语的兴趣，并且能提高阅读能力。
三、教学内容
第一课 keeping time (2学时)
主要内容：chapter 1 what time is it?
Reading skills: predicting
Vocabulary skill: idioms using time
Real life skill: recognizing common time abbreviations
学习要求：了解阅读过程中预测的重要性；掌握时间谚语；并能认识一般的时间缩略词。
自学：chapter 2 are you a procrastinator?
作业：完成两个章节后相应的词汇练习、阅读技巧训练题。
第二课 love and marriage(2学时)
主要内容：chapter 1have I found Ms.Right?
Reading skills: scanning
Vocabulary skill: antonyms
Real life skill: invitation
学习要求：了解阅读过程中速读的重要性；掌握阅读中反义词的灵活运用。
自学：chapter 2 wedding customs
作业：完成两个章节后相应的词汇练习、阅读技巧训练题。
第三课 what’s stressing you out?(2学时)
主要内容：chapter 1 study stress
Reading skills: skimming for the main idea
Vocabulary skill: prefixes over- and under-
Real life skill: dictionary usage: parts of speech
学习要求：了解阅读过程中掠读的重要性；掌握前缀over- 和under-；并能熟练使用字典查找单词词性。

第四课 amazing animals(2学时)
主要内容：chapter 1 endangered species

学习要求：掌握阅读过程中用掠读方式获得中心思想的方法；掌握词根fic/fice。

第十四课 the art world(2学时)
主要内容：chapter 1 what constitutes art?

学习要求：掌握阅读过程中速读的方法；掌握同音词。
自学：chapter 2 is tattooing an art form?
作业：完成两个章节后相应的词汇练习、阅读技巧训练题。
第十五课 复习课(2学时)
主要内容：介绍期终考试的题型及范围；复习1-14课的课文内容、阅读技巧、词汇知识及其他相关内容。
第十六课 期终考试
四、教学基本要求
本课程按照主题进行，取材于语言、文化、社会生活等方面。通过主题探讨呈现词汇，并通过相关活动巩固所学语言知识，扩充背景知识。本课程主题内容包括时间观念、爱情与婚姻、压力、动物、文化差异、金钱、时尚、医学、太空、家庭变化、教育、人体、艺术、交通等各方面的内容。在主题阅读中，掌握下列阅读技巧与技能：速读、掠读、总结段落主题、分辨原因与结果、区分中心意思与发展句之间的差异、根据上下文推测意思等。同时，掌握下列词汇技巧与技能：熟练使用字典、掌握前缀、词根、同音词等。
五、教学方法
本课程实行专题讨论、课堂讲授、小组活动等教学方式；课程共有十六个单元，每一单元设一个主题，在主题阅读之外，每单元另外进行相应的阅读技巧与技能、词汇构成和实用英语技巧与技能的讲解。本课程采用以计算机、网络、教学软件和课堂综合应用为主的教学模式。
本课程所采用的教学媒体主要有：文字教材（包括主教材和学习指导书）、课件（包括主讲老师对全书的系统讲授，还有重要内容的文字提示与电子教学幻灯片）、及网上相同主题内容的浏览等。
在评价系统和考试办法上，本课程采用形成性评估和终结性评估相结合的办法。过程性评估主要考查学生的出勤、作业完成、课堂参与等等情况。终结性评估主要期末卷面考试。考试采用试卷形式，考试为闭卷考试。
学生成绩=平时（出勤、作业、课堂参与等）（80%）+ 期末考试（70%）如下图：

七、本课程与其它课程的联系与分工
本课程是整个大学英语教学体系中的有机组成部分，不仅能使学生打好英语基础、培养英语兴趣，而且也可以作为拓展学生高层次英语阅读技能的课程，为学生今后有效的英语运用打好基础。
