The Tom Cruise Katie Holmes divorce is poised to get much uglier. Now there are reports that Cruise is planning to bring his own divorce suit against Holmes.

That seems like a terrible idea for Cruise’s public image. Much of the publicity surrounding the divorce so far has centered around Holmes trying to get away from Scientology. (That speculation has led to a spate of really good articles about the creepiest aspects of Scientology.) Scientology is Cruise’s bete noir. The less he has to talk about it the better for his image. If the divorce drags out and goes to court, Cruise will likely end of having to do a lot of explaining about Scientology.

His career took a real hit five years ago when got into a televised argument with Matt Lauer about Scientology. There’s not much upside for Cruise in trying to defend his religion. When he does, he comes off as obsessive and scary.

The average for all celebrities in E-Poll’s E-Score Celebrity poll is 5%. E-Poll ranks more than 6, 500 celebrities on awareness, appeal and 46 different personality attributes. Holmes earned a 7% negative rating.

Then there are the comments from respondents who were asked “What other words would you use to describe this celebrity?”

Some of the reactions to Cruise: “crazy, ” “conniving, ” “psychotic” and on the good side “handsome.”

Considering those responses, leaving Cruise might be the best thing Holmes could do for her career right now. She is being anything but withdrawn. If reports are to be believed Holmes is fighting as hard and as cleverly as she can to protect her daughter from Scientology’s infamous Sea Org.
