Democrats and republicans insist bi-partisanship is not dead as potentially devastating austerity measures loom.
“I’ve opened the compromise.”
“We say to this president we want to work with you on solutions.”
“But I believe we can come together and accomplish the task of…”
“Let’s challenge ourselves to find the common ground that’s just …”
But the clamor for a common ground can not overpass partisan disagreements. Most republicans still reject President Obama’s call to raise taxes on the wealthy.
“We don’t understand why raising tax rates is the solution if you want to see people get back to work.”
And many democrats reject republican calls to extract savings from programs that provide income and health care for retirees.
Senator Elizabeth Warren campaigned on protecting American’s social safety net: “I will not go to Washington to cut Medicare or social security benefits.”
Labor unions are weighing in with television acts. “How do we move our country forward and reduce the deficit? By creating jobs and growing our economy, not by cutting programs that families rely on most.”
“Time is running out.”
