§56 索无物喻
(56) TO ASK NOTHING
昔有二人，道中共行，见一人将胡麻车在险路中，不得前。时将车者语彼二人：“佐我推车出此险路。”
Once upon a time, two men walking together saw another fellow trying in vain to pull a chariot loaded with sesame out of a hole on the road. To the two men, the fellow said, "Please give me a hand."
二人答言：“与我何物？”
The two men replied, "What are our, rewards?"
将车者言：“无物与汝。”
The fellow said, "Nothing."
时此二人即佐推车，至于平地，语将车人言：“与我物来。”
In spite of the answer, the two men helped to get the chariot out of the hole. They demanded, "Now give us something."
答曰：“无物。”
The fellow replied, "I'll give you nothing!"
又复语言：“与我‘无物’。”
Again the men said, "Give us "Nothing" then!"
二人之中，其一人者，含笑而言：“彼不肯与，何足为愁。”
Half smiling, one of them said, "He doesn't want to give us anything. No use getting upset."
其人答言：“与我无物，必应有‘无物’。”
The other one replied, "He said he'd give us 'nothing'. We'll settle for that 'nothing'."
其一人言：“‘无物’者，二字共合，是为假名。”
When one of them says 'nothing', that 'nothing' is composed of two words, which constitute an unreal name.
世俗凡夫著无物者，使生无所有处。第二人言“无物”者，即是无相、无愿、无作。
If the vulgar and common people cling to 'nothing', they will be born is Space World of Formlessness. Whereas the other says 'nothing' to signify no form, no vows and no Karma.
白话：
从前有两个人同行，见有人拉著一车胡麻在高坡中上不去。这时拉车者对那两人说：「帮我推推车，走出这个高坡。」这两人说道：「给我们什么物呢?」拉车者道：「无物给你们。」这两人就帮他推车，到了平地上，对拉车者说：「拿物来给我。」他说：「无物。』那人又要求道：「就给我无物。」另一个人含笑说道：「他不肯给，何必相逼呢?」那人说道：「无物给我们，那必定应有无物的。」另一个人说道：「无物么，这是两个词合起来表示意思，就叫做假名，假借名称来表示而已，并非要有个实物来相应。」
世俗凡夫执著于无物这个假名，以为必有一个相应的实物，于是就追求进入无所有的境界，反而执著于这个无所有。另一个说无物之意的人，则以为它就是无相，因为种种现象都没有自性，都是因缘和合，都是空的。明瞭了这一点，在世界上对一切事物就无所愿求，若是无所愿求了，也就不造作生死之业，也就是无相、无愿、无作。但并不是实际存在著一个无相、无愿、无作的实境可以去求取，一旦去求取的话，就如那人要求给他无物一样的荒谬，这就是另一个人说无物的意思。
